2018…by the Numbers

…celebrated 30 years of loaning durable medical equipment to individuals who were unable to afford to buy their own or whose insurance did not cover the cost! We began a fundraising campaign asking for $30 donations to honor this milestone.


…held our inaugural Founder’s Celebration honoring
RCAL’s founder, Joan Gunderson, and celebrating RCAL’s 35th year of providing information, referrals, advocacy and services to individuals with disabilities.
 


…offered 21 disability awareness presentations which reached over 650 elementary, middle and college age students, teachers, parents, co-workers and individuals.


…sent out 44 educational alerts to the RCAL community on legislation affecting the disability community and disability rights in housing, employment, transportation, voting, emergency preparedness, and healthcare. 


…hosted 26 public education activities including a Statewide Plan for Independent Living focus group and a collaboration with the New York State Commission on Human Rights to improve accessibility in Ulster County. We met with county, state and federal representatives including Kingston Mayor Noble, Congressman John Faso, Ulster County Legislators Craig Lopez and Laura Petit, Senator George Amedore, Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, and many others, to discuss the needs of individuals with disabilities.


…were represented in Albany at 4 legislative awareness days with the NYS Legislature. This included a press conference with NYS Assembly Disability Task Force Chair Assemblyman Skoufis, bringing attention to the lack of home accessibility funding, state independent living funding, and the request to create an advocacy office for people with physical disabilities who are currently not represented in state government. 


…provided consultation for 31 different homes requiring architectural barrier modifications.


…assisted 495 families with children requiring special education services through meetings with parents, special education workshops and through providing direct advocacy at special education meetings.  


….provided benefits advisement to 1041 Ulster County residents.
